Reading of our Lord and Savior’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Advent may seem odd to some, but not to many members of the Moravian Church.  That denomination has a tradition of using the same liturgy for Palm Sunday and the First Sunday of Advent.  The theme of the arrival of the Messiah unites the two occasions.

The theme of being in exile at home unites Zechariah 10:6-12 and Matthew 21:1-13.  In this matter I acknowledge the influence of N. T. Wright, author of Jesus and the Victory of God (1996) on my thinking.

Zechariah is a book in two separate sections:  First Zechariah (Chapters 1-8) and Second Zechariah (Chapters 9-14).  First Zechariah is historically related to and concurrent with Haggai (both chapters of it), and dates, in its current state, from no later than 515 B.C.E.  Second Zechariah, from the late Persian period, dates, in its current state, from the middle 400s B.C.E.

The Persian Empire of that period was hardly an onerous taskmaster of Jews living within its borders.  There were ups and downs, of course, but Persians were, overall, much better to live under than the Assyrians and the Chaldeans/Neo-Babylonians.  Nevertheless, in the context of the militarization of the western satrapies during the Greco-Persian wars and the slow economic recovery in the Jewish homeland, many Jews dwelling in their homeland must have felt as if they were in a sort of exile.  Where was the promised Davidic monarch prophets had predicted?

And where was the promised Davidic monarch in the first century C.E., when the Roman Empire ruled the Jewish homeland and a Roman fortress was next door to the Second Temple?  Roman occupation must have felt like a sort of exile to many Jews living in their homeland.

And where was the promised Kingdom of God/Heaven in 85 C.E. and later, after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman Empire in 70 C.E.?  The Kingdom of God was simultaneously of the present and the future–a partially realized reign and realm of God on Earth, but the Kingdom of Heaven was the promised fully realized reign and realm of God on Earth.  (I refer you, O reader, to Jonathan Pennington‘s dismantling of the Dalman consensus, or the ubiquitous argument that, in the Gospel of Matthew, “Kingdom of Heaven” is a reverential circumlocution.)

For that matter, where is the promised Kingdom of Heaven today?  We of 2018 live in exile while at home.  Only God can usher in the Kingdom of Heaven.

We can, however, live ethically, both collectively and individually.  Love, after all, is the fulfillment of the Law.  May we, therefore, strive to live (both collectively and individually) according to the Golden Rule, and not make a mockery of that commandment by citing doctrine and dogma to excuse violations of it.

Exiles whom God commanded to flee from the place of their captivity (in Zechariah 2) must have felt grateful.  Certainly the captors did not feel blessed, however.  Those who lived by the sword died the same way.

The author of the Letter to the Hebrews quoted Psalm 45:6-7 in 1:8-9.  He did so in reference to Jesus, a deliverer of a variety different from Cyrus II, King of the Persians and the Medes.  Jesus was greater than Cyrus.  However, Jesus (the historical figure, not the eternal Second Person of the Trinity; Christology is complicated) had a humble origin as a baby.  He did not outwardly seem great to uninformed people at first.  Simeon of Jerusalem was among the informed; he recognized the Messiah immediately.

Now, Lord, you are releasing your servant in peace,

according to your promise.

For I have seen with my own eyes

the deliverance you have made ready in full view of all nations:

a light that will bring revelation to the Gentiles

and glory to your people Israel.

The reading, however, should extend through verse 35, at least.  By continuing to read we find the predictions of the rejection of Jesus and the piercing of Mary’s heart.

Often good news comes mixed with bad news–sometimes for the same people.  Does this reality shake our confidence that God is good?

As for revelation to the Gentiles, we will pick up that thread in the next post.

Thus we have a segue to the hopeful message of Zechariah 1 and 2.  The rest of the material is mostly dark and joyless, however.  Especially memorable is the fate of the servant who was not ready when his master returned unexpectedly in Matthew 24:51 (The Revised English Bible, 1989):

[The master] will cut him in pieces and assign him a place where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.

My concept of God is one which encompasses judgment and mercy, with the two falling simultaneously sometimes; judgment for one person can constitute mercy for another.  Nevertheless, the recent fixation on judgment in the lectionary has proven tiresome.  I want more of the joy the Lutheran collect mentions.

The readings from First Zechariah encourage societal repentance.  The remnant of the Hebrews consisted of descendants of members of a society which had rebelled against God–to the extent of engaging in ritual child sacrifice–and paid terribly for its actions.  The repentance to which God called the Hebrews was not for their sake alone.  No, they were to become a light to the nations; that was their calling.

Each of us, likewise, has a vocation to function as an instrument of God in the midst of those around us at any given moment.  This point brings me to Romans 7.  The law, St. Paul the Apostle reminds us, provides labels for and convicts us of our sins.  We ought to do better, but we cannot succeed on our own power.  As the best part of the chapter, which our lections omit, tells us:

I discover this principle, then:  that when I want to do right, only wrong is within my reach.  In my inmost self, I delight in the law of God, but I perceive in my outward actions a different law that my mind that my mind approves, and making me a prisoner under the law of sin which controls my conduct.  Wretched creature that I am, who is there to rescue me from this state of death?  Who but God?  Thanks be to him through Jesus Christ our Lord!  To sum up then:  left to myself I serve God’s law with my mind, but with my unspiritual nature I serve the law of sin.

And, since society is just people, this principle applies on the societal level also.  As A Brief Statement of Belief (1962) of the former Presbyterian Church in the United States (1861-1983), the old “Southern Presbyterian Church,” summarizes total depravity so well, with a Neo-Orthodox twist:

Sin permeates and corrupts our entire being and burdens us more and more with fear, hostility, guilt, and misery.  Sin operates not only within individuals but also within society as a deceptive and oppressive power so that even men of good will are unconsciously and unwillingly involved in the sins of society.  Man cannot destroy the tyranny of sin in himself or in his world; his only hope is to be delivered from it by God.

That quote summarizes many social problems past and present well, does it not?

As for me, I read St. Paul’s words about not doing what he wants to do and doing what he does not want to do and identify with them.  I have, for example, known that God has called me to forgive certain people.  I have wanted to obey that command, but I have been unable to do so on my own power.  I have, in fact, been of two minds on the subject.  But at least I have wanted to obey God; that has been a fine start.  And God has empowered me to do the rest.  So thanks to God, I have found the freedom of forgiveness, which only one who has struggled to forgive can know.

Our duty is to respond favorably to God, who will empower us to do the rest.  Our free will, by which we can say “yes” to God is itself evidence of grace, so we live in the midst of divine graciousness.  May we therefore say with the author of Psalm 145:

The LORD is gracious and full of compassion,

slow to anger and of great kindness.

Then may we endeavor to act graciously, compassionately, and kindly, becoming be grace beacons of the light of God, seeking to change unjust social and political structures (in which many of us are unwittingly complicit) and inspiring others to do the same.  Hebrew prophets would certainly approve.

A city’s walls were supposed to defend it.  Thus a Jerusalem without walls would seem to be defenseless.  Yet, in Zechariah, God will defend the city.  Walls, as defensive technology, have proven lacking throughout history.  Invaders breached the Great Wall of China.  Constantinople fell in 1453 despite its walls.  The walls of Jericho could not survive an earthquake.  So I am with Zechariah; God is preferable to any wall.

Walls also provide convenient boundaries.  The city is on one side of the wall.  East Berlin was over here and West Berlin was over there, from the East German perspective.  Over here, from the Israeli angle, is the Jewish side of the West Bank; the Palestinian side is over there.  The other is over there, away from here–with a wall to separate them.

Before I built a wall I’d ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,

That wants it down.

Paul encouraged his readers at Rome to

Accept one another for the sake of God’s glory, as Christ accepted you.

Walls work against that purpose.  God is preferable to any wall.

Was it lawful to eat meat once offered to imaginary deities or to consume food impure by the standards of the Law of Moses?  Paul understood the answer to that question to be yes, although he chose to abstain from certain culinary options for the sake of others.  It was difficult to find meat not sacrificed to idols, so one might have become a vegetarian to avoid even the appearance of something considered improper.  On the other hand, since those gods did not exist, why let good food go to waste?

Scrupulousness is good, but it can go too far.  A lack of scrupulousness, in Zechariah, had prompted God’s anger.  Yet there would be mercy for the punished Hebrews.  Once again judgment and mercy came in proximity to each other.  Paul’s personal deprivation aside, I feel no need to deny myself proper pleasures which others might interpret wrongly.  The truth is that anything I do might offend someone of a certain rigidity of attitudes.  I refuse to permit such rigidity dictate my lifestyle choices.  Yet neither will I confront them about their choices.  Their business is theirs, as mine is my own.

I looked up, and I saw four horns.  I asked the angel who talked with me,

What are those?

He replied,

Those are the horns that tossed Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

Then the LORD showed me four smiths.

What are they coming to do?

I asked.  He replied:

Those are the horns that tossed Judah, so that no man could raise his head; and these men have come to throw them into a panic, to hew down the horns of the nations that raise a horn against the land of Judah, to toss it.

I looked up, and I saw a man holding a measuring line.

Where are you going?

I asked.

To measure Jerusalem,

he replied,

to see how long and wide it used to be.

But the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him.  The former said to him,

Run to that young man and tell him:

“Jerusalem shall be prepared as a city without walls, so that many shall be the men and cattle it contains.  And I Myself–declares the LORD–though I swept you [there] like the four winds of heaven–declares the LORD.”

The Book of Zechariah exists in two sections written by different people at separate times.  This book bears the marks of apocalyptic literature.  These include visions, symbols, and numerology.  In order to make sense of this day’s reading from Zechariah, then, one needs to understand its historical context first.

Zechariah 2 is contemporary to the Book of Haggai, being set only two months later.  The returned Jewish exiles live in their homeland, yet within a foreign empire.  They live among ruins and poverty, yet know of the glorious past of their nation.  And they long for national restoration.

A horn symbolized power, and the number four indicated totality and the points of the compass.  Powerful nations of the earth have tossed Judah to and fro, but God will toss those nations to and fro, Zechariah says.  Furthermore, Jerusalem will not have defensive walls as people think of them; God will be the walls of the greatly-expanded city.  The prophet sets all this in the future.  In the meantime, reality remains unchanged.

(Aside:  One ought not to misconstrue this reading as a Zionist text that excuses any human rights violation by the government of the State of Israel or exempts it from criticism.  Biblical commands to love one’s neighbor as oneself apply to all people at all times and all places, regardless of what one thinks about a particular nation-state or its government.)

Back to our main idea…

Jesus, in Luke 9:51, “set his face toward Jerusalem,” and therefore his arrest, torture, execution, and resurrection.  Difficult times were in his short-term future, but there was only so much that human authorities could do to him.  Yes, torturing and executing a man slowly are terrible, but once he has died and risen again, that man exists beyond their reach.  Our Lord’s deliverance from the reach of his adversaries came only after a series of ordeals.  Likewise, many Christian martyrs have suffered much.  But, after their enemies have killed them, the faith has lived on. They have killed people, not a religion.  They have failed, and all they have to show for their efforts is a collection of corpses.  Meanwhile, the martyrs have gone to Heaven.

Jesus died of violence in the name of God and an empire.  Yet God is love, so there is no such thing as sacred violence or holy war.  This might be difficult to understand when one is the aggrieved party seeking divine retribution upon those who have committed violence.  The author of Zechariah 2 did not understand this.  At times I have not grasped this either.  The desire for revenge is natural yet destructive, and we ought not to feed it.

Rather, we should do the more difficult thing and pursue the constructive path:  love and forgiveness.  This is consistent with the Golden Rule, the greatest moral commandment.  Then we will liberate ourselves from the power of our oppressors.  True, they might be able to kill us, but then all they will have to show for their efforts is a corpse.  But they have no power to destroy one’s soul.

In days to come, Zechariah wrote, God will restore the Jewish people to glory, and this glory will surpass that which preceded it.  God himself will be that glory.  Until then, however, the people must put up with indignities.

In days to come, Jesus knew, he would be triumph over his foes, who were plotting to entrap and kill him.  First, however, they would seem to win.  And he would suffer terribly.  But he would triumph.

But what are we to do in the present and the future, until those days come?  We are called to trust in God and act accordingly.  This is the God who, as Psalm 121 says, “keeps watch over Israel” and “shall neither slumber nor sleep.”  Sometimes God, whom the psalm also says “shall keep you safe,” seems to be napping or at least turning a blind eye, but let us not be unduly critical.  The consequences of our actions still play out and backfire on us.  The rain falls on the just as well as on the unjust.  Life is not fair, and the existence of the caring deity does not preclude suffering.  But we are not alone, and God, balancing judgment and mercy, is never far away.

We do not need to defend God.  Besides, any deity who requires a human defense is pitiful and weak.  Yet we do need to witness to God with our lives–as well as our words, when those are appropriate.  More important, though, is the witness via one’s life, for words without the corresponding life ring hollow.  And we need to remember that God’s time moves at a different pace than ours, so patience is par for the course.  This can be very difficult, but it is essential.  We need to trust in God, not get in the way while trying to help.

In the days to come, sooner or later, the victory of God will be more complete.  Until then, we must deal with daily life, no matter how much we dislike this fact.  But we have a calling to live faithfully, in trust.  God grants us the grace to do this, so we need not fret about doing this on our own power (which is inadequate anyway).  In the meantime, may we not nurture frustration, hatred, bigotry, and violence.  Rather, may we seek to love and support each other; it is what Jesus would do.
